“The temple from a Bedouin cave, Petra” by Hafsa Burt, ,

Petra is a remarkable tale of building a civilization in the mountains hidden from enemies and carve out marvelous structures for people to wonder about centuries later. The Nabateans achieved this extraordinarily with the channels in the siq (canyon) to the meticulously carved treasury. You have to go up 900 steps to the monastery at Petra. This summer day was over 93° F and I was blown away by the resilience of the local Bedouins. They work in this heat 12-14 hours, live from the land and have minimal impact on it. I wondered how we can learn lessons in resilience and sustainability from them. What you don’t see in the photo is my ‘cave’ mate a donkey resting and some Bedouin kids playing with my phone. We also had coffee with a Bedouin, who nonchalantly said “I’m like a fish if you take me out of here I’d die”.
